Description
If you have inverted or smooth nipples, you may have difficulties in latching your newborn. Nipple shields are a great way to avoid giving up breastfeeding, if you and your baby are really struggling to latch and there is no alternative.
Our Haakaa style nipple shield is only recommended as a last resort and it will only work once your milk has come in. Using the shield might compromise your milk supply, as the breast is not getting enough stimulation for milk synthesis. Therefore, it should only be used after consultation with an IBCLC, and in conjunction with an electric breast pump.
The Haakaa style nipple shield is a specialised product and should only be used if your baby cannot latch and their future of latching is also in jeopardy. They are easy to use compared to a standard nipple shield, but the downside is that your baby might have troubles re-latching to the nipple once their physiological barrier to feeding is improved.
